Zachary Taylor was a U.S. military commander during the Black Hawk and Mexican-American Wars prior to being elected as the 12th President of the United States in 1848 as the Whig Party nominee, though he openly described himself as a Jeffersonian-Democrat philosophically. He died in office of gastroenteritis, succeeded by Vice President Millard Fillmore.
