Yvonne Bailey-Smith

Yvonne Bailey-Smith is a Jamaican-English author and retired family therapist known for her debut novel, The Day I Fell Off My Island.

Yvonne Bailey-Smith was born in Jamaica and immigrated to the UK in 1969 when she was a teenager. She trained and worked first as a social worker before becoming a psychotherapist.

Her rich life experiences and professional background as a social worker and family psychotherapist have significantly contributed to her unique perspective as an author.

Yvonne's creativity and energy are unmistakable, setting a compelling example for her three accomplished children. One of her children, the renowned novelist Zadie Smith, has garnered international acclaim for her literary contributions. Additionally, her middle child, Ben (also known as Doc Brown), is a versatile artist, excelling as a rapper, comedian, screenwriter, children's author, and actor. Yvonne's youngest son, Luke, is a rapper and writer.

It was first revealed that Bailey-Smith was a writer in 2019 when an excerpt from the novel was published in the landmark anthology New Daughters of Africa, which featured the work of 200 women of African descent.

Her debut novel, The Day I Fell Off My Island (2021), explores the story of a young girl who traveled to England at the age of 14 — as she did — to be reunited with her mother and younger siblings after spending her early childhood in Jamaica, being brought up by her grandparents.

Yvonne Bailey-Smith lives in London.
