Sara Ochs is an American author of travel-based thrillers. She is best known for The Resort (2024) and This Stays Between Us (2025), which combine mystery with exotic locales. The Resort was a Book of the Month main selection and an Amazon Editor's Pick.
Sara Ochs was born and raised in upstate New York. She studied international business at Loyola University Maryland (2007–2011) and earned her Juris Doctor from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law (2011–2014).
After graduation, she pursued a career in law and became an adjunct law professor at Elon University School of Law, where she teaches legal writing and international law.
Sara Ochs completed her first thriller and sought representation through the #PitMad Twitter pitch competition. "I had a somewhat unconventional approach to querying," she recalls. Several agents expressed interest, leading her to submit to ten. She accepted an offer from Kate Burke at Blake Friedmann Literary Agency in London.
Her submission process to publishers moved quickly. "I received a pre-empt from a British publisher about a week and a half after my agent's first submission," she said. The next day, she received another pre-empt from Transworld, her UK publisher. In the U.S., her book deal took three weeks, culminating in an auction where she accepted an offer from Sourcebooks.
The Resort is set on a remote Thai island and follows two mysterious women, a group of expats, and a murder threatening their world. This Stays Between Us follows an Australian study abroad program that takes a deadly turn.
She finds joy in meeting publishing teams and seeing her work come to life. "A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit London, where both my agent and publisher are based," she said. She visited bookstores and delivered galleys. "It was an absolute dream!"
The author describes writing as a test of patience and faith. "It's so easy to fall into the trap of thinking, 'Why am I spending so much time on this when this book may never see the light of day?'" She writes because she loves the craft, not because she expects success.
She has an organised approach to life, but a looser approach to writing. "For some reason, I'm a bit of a mess when planning my books!" Instead of complete outlines, she sketches the main scenes first and fills in the gaps later.
Sara Ochs now lives with her family in North Carolina.
