A heuristic is a strategy we derive from previous experience with a similar problem. One heuristic that everyone knows is “trial and error,” a strategy for finding answers to problems we face.

When faced with decisions, I ask myself: “Will the outcome of a decision change the way I live?” If you ask that yourself consistently, you’ll find that you automatically filter out useless information and only make decisions that have an actual impact on the outcome of your life. You force yourself to use whatever works—what’s useful. And what impacts your habits.

I’ve discovered two main types of useful thoughts:

Thinking about how you can solve problems. A problem is just an unanswered question. Put your brain to use and think about how you can solve problems. There are a lot of those on this earth.
Understanding knowledge. That means this: Try to internalize knowledge and think about how you can use that knowledge to improve your life, career, work, relationships, etc.

Remember: Money is a replaceable resource. When you’re out of it, you can earn it back. You can’t say the same for time. Don’t spend too much time thinking about money.

I must say, three years ago, I was far away from the person that I am today. I would complain, feel sorry for myself, blame others, and I would never have acted on anything meaningful. But through reading, journaling, and blogging every week, I have transformed my life

I’ve watched the movie more than a dozen times, and I’ve read the book more than once. That single thought inspired me to become independent. I’m not my job. And I’m certainly not my bank account.

But who are we, if we are not those things? For the past 17 or 18 years, I’ve been meditating on that question. As of now, I believe that we are our actions. And our actions reveal our character. That’s who we are.

The funny thing is that we are our job. After all, we spend the majority of our time earning a living. We trade time for money. Whether you like it or not, you have to spend a part of your life doing that. Most people end up trading time for money during their entire life. But a few of us spend their time in a way now, that they have a better life tomorrow.

Make your life so simple that it’s a breeze to live. And let’s be honest here. Who wants to live a life that’s impossible? Life is already hard enough. Don’t make it harder.

No, it’s not normal to check your phone every 2 minutes.
No, it’s not normal to gossip all the time.
No, it’s not normal to be bored.

Look, I’m not saying that replacing bad habits with good habits is bad advice. The problem is that most of us only apply that advice to one habit at a time. And yes, that does not work. Think about it. If you drink alcohol every day and eat unhealthy food, what will happen if you quit drinking? If you continue to eat candy bars, salted nuts, potato chips, burgers, pizza, it will not take long before you think, “A beer would sure taste nice with this burger.”
If you’re addicted to consuming content on social media and watching tv shows, you can’t “just” get rid of your social media apps on your phone. If you have a tv, you’ll simply binge watch some crap on Netflix. And before you know it, you’ll reinstall those apps with one click. Most of the time, you can pick up right where you left off. You don’t even have to sign in again. Don’t go down that road. Instead, be committed to change. If you truly want to break your bad habits, go extreme on yourself. Yes, I’m actually saying you should take it seriously. Why? Because your life is a serious matter.
Remember this: If you want to break your bad habits, BREAK THEM ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Go all in. Or don’t go at all.
