Liam Murray Bell is a Scottish author and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Stirling. He is best known for his novels So It Is (2012) and The Busker (2014), both published by Myriad Editions and his latest thriller, The Sleepless (2023).
Liam Murray Bell was born in Orkney and raised in Glasgow. Bell pursued his BA at Queen's University, Belfast, before returning to Glasgow for an MLitt in Creative Writing. He completed his PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Surrey in 2012.
His teaching career includes contributions to postgraduate creative writing programmes, where he mentors emerging writers.
The Sleepless, Bell’s most recent novel, builds on his reputation for suspenseful storytelling. The book follows Grafton, a single father and aspiring journalist, as he investigates a Scottish commune that claims sleep is a social construct.
Drawn to the commune by its unsettling similarities to a cult his estranged wife joined in India, Grafton becomes entangled in a chilling conspiracy. As tensions within the commune escalate, he must confront its dark truths to protect his son, Isaac. The Sleepless combines psychological depth with high-stakes drama.
Critics have lauded The Sleepless for its taut pacing and innovative premise. Rachelle Atalla described it as “a taut and ambitious cult thriller,” while The Herald praised its ability to “get the pulse racing.”
