A period of uncertainty followed, time dragging as I settled down and waited with my cheek resting against the pillow of my hands. I wasn’t looking at Adam. My eyes were closed, the sun hot on my skin. I lay there and wondered if it wasn’t too late, that I wasn’t in fact already burning under its glare.
I listened for sounds of Adam breathing, worked hard for any sensory clue he was still present. As the seconds passed, I became more and more certain his nerve had broken and Adam had run.
