My hands are shaking when I reach out for the door handles and yank them open, praying to all the gods that this is a terrible joke.

    An illusion.

I even check over my shoulder to see if the twins are there, burying their laughter.

But there is no one and the figure remains.

And when she turns around, she fills the balcony with light. All of her is glowing. From her bright, shining face, to her bright golden wings.

Pixie dust glitters in the air around her.

“Hello, Peter Pan,” Tinker Bell says.

    “And the Crocodile?”

I look past her toward the hallway and the stairs beyond, as if I can sense him just barely out of my reach.

He is at his most vulnerable again and in my house and taking up space in a bed I own. I could kill him.

    I want to kill him.

But I want to reach Wendy Darling first and see his face when he catches up and realizes I’ve bested him.

“If he survives this coma, when he wakes, tell him exactly where I went.”

    “Another fight, Jas?”

    “The last one, Smee.”

    And I want Vane.

Because I am Winnie fucking Darling and no man will steal my power.

“Go on, Win,” Vane says with a rumble that reverberates through his chest. “Soak our cocks.”

“You have the shadow,” he says to me.

After he blows out a breath of smoke, he says, “Start running.”

    “Vane,” Pan warns again.

    “Start running, Winnie Darling.”

I right my dress. “And if I don’t?”

He doesn’t answer me. I suppose there is no if. When Vane gives a command, you best start running.

The dark thing likes the sound of that.

    Likes the game.

“Why do you do this to me, Win?”

When he finds out she killed his brother…

I set her to her feet. “It would seem you’ve somehow claimed the Neverland Death Shadow.”

    “What?!” she yells.
