Still most of the non-writing souls do much the same. They are everyday people telling their stories, playing the deck of cards they were handed. Weaving delicate threads amidst complicated relationships and human connections. That is why not just writing blokes should consider themselves every bit as fascinating as Mark Twain or Emily Dickinson. Perhaps more so. For writers are far too often holed up in a room priming and readying their stories for the outside world. While the others are out there in it. Engaging fully in the game of life. Chasing curly haired grandchildren across the front yard, picking vegetables from the summer garden. Healing the sick and feeding the hungry. Praying for the masses. These may be the true storytellers of our time. If we but listen often and well to their wisdom and crisp observations we would find shiny chunks of gold.

Mary Austin was an enigma to me.
