Help Wanted

“So? What’s up with us this summer? Where are we going? The beach? The mountains? Where?”

I closed the lid on the box. I was finally all packed up for the summer. I looked over to my boyfriend. “Ryan, I already told you that I am trying to land a job this summer. I’m not as fortunate as you and can lounge around the pool all summer.”

Ryan snorted. “I wish.”

I lifted an eyebrow. “What rich daddy dearest cut off your cash flow?”

He made a face as he picked up the box and we headed out of my apartment. “He wants me to work at the firm this summer to get some experience.” He set the box in the car and turned to me, pulling me close. “I’d rather lay on a beach somewhere with you.”

I wrapped my arms around his neck. “I’d like that too. But I too need the experience. Besides, I love kids and I want to work with them. So what better way to gain experience than by working as a nanny?”

He grinned suddenly. “We could have a couple of our own.”

I shoved him away, laughing. “I don’t think so.”

“Oh well. I tried.”

I started to say something else but was cut off by my phone ringing. I glanced at the screen, not recognizing the number at first. “Wait, I think this might be one of the families I applied to. Hello?”
