The story begins with Peter Moran driving across the Sussex countryside on a rainy night. When he stops to give a lift to an untidy pedestrian, he is shocked to discover that he is an old wartime comrade from the Royal Flying Corps. Moran's loyalty is tested as he decides to help his friend, even though he is guilty of treason.
