Istyn, a wandering biologist, brings a chilling revelation: the anemone is awakening.  Its burgeoning consciousness carries a nascent resentment towards the humans it perceives as parasites. Shearva is trapped between an impossible rock and a hard place.  Destroying the anemone means condemning her people, but nurturing its awakening could unleash an unimaginable power.
Whispers of the anemone's awakening spread through the Citadel like a contagion, breeding fear and division.  Dr. Jillian Vargas, a brilliant geneticist, grapples with the ethics of manipulating a sentient being, while Captain Nathaniel Bell, head of the Citadel’s defense, sees only an existential threat, demanding swift and brutal action.  As the anemone stirs, strange phenomena plague the Citadel: flickering lights, discordant echoes, and walls that seem to breathe.  Then, the unthinkable happens: children vanish, absorbed into the anemone's pulsating flesh.
