Brought up as a sheltered Southern belle, Mellie found her introduction to life in the Everglades a bit of a shock. Benjamin Cage, the complete opposite of her polished congressman fiancé, was another shock. Ben forced Mellie to question the values she had been taught to believe in all her life and encouraged her to think for herself. As Mellie came to know Ben, she wondered if there was something missing from her life, which only he could provide.
