TEXTBOOK OF SOIL SCIENCE

Soil science is the study of soil as a natural resource on the surface of the earth including soil formation, classification and mapping; physical, chemical, biological, and fertility properties of soils; and these properties in relation to the use and management of soils. Soil scientists have raised concerns about how to preserve soil and arable land in a world with a growing population, possible future water crisis, increasing per capita food consumption, and land degradation. Soil chemistry is affected by mineral composition, organic matter and environmental factors. Soil mechanics is used to analyze the deformations of and flow of fluids within natural and man-made structures that are supported on or made of soil, or structures that are buried in soils. The present publication attempts to bring together the basic principles of soil science and the dynamics of erosion in all forms, for the benefit of the student as well as researcher and practising professional associated with conservation of natural resources. The publication will be of immense use to all those interested in this vital scientific area of earth studies.
