Part one of the story is about Kiskeya (present day The Dominican Republic).) It tells of a young Taino, Migua, before, during, and after the arrival of Columbus. It tells of the dangers and hardships he and his bride-to-be endured.
It also tells of a romance between a young sailor with Columbus and a Taino girl, and how their lives intertwined with that of Migua and his girl.
Part II tells the story of a young Taino, Anoki, on the island of Boriken (present day Puerto Rico) and his struggles against the conquering Spaniards under Ponce de Leon.
