Hired by the monolithic Helios Corporation, Rust is tasked with retrieving a stolen perpetual-motion steam engine — an invention that could shatter Helios's iron grip on the galaxy or ignite a devastating war.  The engine’s creator, Elias Thorne, believes his creation can liberate the independent miners struggling under corporate oppression, sparking a revolution across the Copper Frontier.
Rust's pursuit begins in Crucible, a rough-and-tumble mining town nestled within a hollowed-out asteroid, where fortunes are forged and shattered in the heart of the belt.  He navigates dimly lit saloons and clandestine gambling dens, following Thorne’s trail through a web of whispered rumors and cryptic messages. But Rust isn't the only hunter on the prowl.  Natasha Logan, a ruthless bounty hunter with a vendetta against Helios and a reputation as cold as space itself, also seeks the engine, aiming to use its power to dismantle the corporation from within. 
As Rust delves deeper, he uncovers a conspiracy far more intricate than a simple theft. The perpetual-motion engine isn’t just an energy source; it's a Pandora's Box, capable of generating a volatile byproduct — a highly unstable form of condensed steam that could turn any vessel into a devastating weapon.  He must choose between fulfilling his contract and handing Helios the ultimate weapon, or siding with Thorne and risking the uncontrolled release of the engine's destructive power.
