Dr. Oronhyatekha (“Burning Cloud”), born Mohawk royalty on the Six Nations reserve in 1841, led not one, but two extraordinary lives, becoming Chief of the Mohawks and, under the name “Peter Martin,” an Oxford-educated medical doctor and entrepreneur. He counted as friends some of the most powerful people of the day, including John A. Macdonald and Theodore Roosevelt.
Oronhyatekha was raised among a people who espoused peace, power, and righteousness as their creed. He was also raised in a Victorian society that believed God, honour, and duty were their guides. He successfully interwove these messages throughout his life, and lived as a man of significant accomplishments in both worlds.
