As a younger man I felt very much alone during major life events and phase changes because those before me felt such subjects shouldn’t be discussed and failed to mention many of the hardships and trials that are presented while seriously dating, when one is engaged, married, and really begins living life. I understand that one’s sex life is personal, but there are many general details that can and should be discussed, as those words of wisdom may silence fears and divert many from sinful paths. Through many scriptural references, quotes from prophets and leaders and relatable movies, and personal experiences, “Standard Issue” directly yet delicately discusses these topics at the level of young LDS men, those returning from a mission or leaving home for school or work. It further provides insight and hope that such trials can be tackled and that the men embarking in or enduring through them aren’t alone, knowing others have been there and have had those thoughts that men deem crazy.
