Theodore Dreiser

An American Tragedy

On one level, An American Tragedy is the story of the corruption and destruction of one man, Clyde Griffiths, who forfeits his life in desperate pursuit of success. On a deeper, more profound level, the novel represents a massive portrayal of the society whose values both shape Clyde's tawdry ambitions and seal his fate: It is an unsurpassed depiction of the harsh realities of American life and of the dark side of the American Dream. Extraordinary in scope and power, vivid in its sense of wholesale human waste, unceasing in its rich compassion, An American Tragedy stands as Theodore Dreiser's supreme achievement.

Based on an actual crime case, An American Tragedy was the inspiration for the film A Place in the Sun, winner of six Academy Awards, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift.

I was really astonished by the plot of this book. It is very interesting and intriguing. You can hardly guess what will happen in the next chapter. Additionally, I learned a lot of things which I didn't know before and really thankful that such story may aid me significantly not only in my studies but also in my entire life. The shifting character of Clyde - from religious serenity to moral corruption was the most intriguing. I 'd point out that this story was based on the real crime - The Murder of Grace Brown. So, I believe that the main message of the author is to warn us to escape from such actions similar to those of Clyde - lying, not listening to parents, not having any aim in life. Thus, I assuredly advise everyone to read this book and enjoy the unexpected plot

It's all great, especially for people with deeper interests to know what yesterdays had offered, and what has built our todays. Overall, reading these titles only create persistent requests for more and a blend of modern ones.

He could not get it all straight, but still he could not help respecting his mother, a woman whose force and earnestness, as well as her sweetness, appealed to him.

one of those vain, handsome, animal personalities, all clothes and airs, but no morals (no taste, no courtesy or real tenderness even), but of compelling magnetism,

The principal thing that troubled Clyde up to his fifteenth year, and for long after in retrospect, was that the calling or profession of his parents was the shabby thing that it appeared to be in the eyes of others.
