After the Philipps University was subdivided in 1968 into 20 separate faculties, seven professors founded the Marburg Society of Scholars on 21 May 1968 with the aim of “generally promoting spoken and written scholarship in the general community beyond the boundaries of the faculties at the University.” The Society has regularly presented lectures with this aim in mind, some of them published for the first time in this volume.
