The book was published the same year the Vietnam War ended. There were several domestic and international issues in the 1970s which disillusioned a large majority of Americans.
The author takes the early history of America and presents the events of his time. He was criticized for being too much inclined towards radical Jewish humanism. There is no doubt that the story obviously demonstrates the plight of the oppressed populations such as African Americans and immigrants, so that compassion and social awareness could be created.
